Lesson #1-What is the Difference?

Lesson #2-Keep It Simple!

Health concepts can be conveyed with simple witticisms. There is never a need to resort to technical explanations. A simple analogy that explains how natural health works is that of painting rusted lawn furniture with rust control paint. Just like treating a rust problem on lawn furniture, the only thing that will help your personal health is:

  1. researching what is needed to be done,
  2. making a decision as what needs to be done, and then
  3. finally, taking action.

The primary health problem that we should all be treating right now is the disease called life. The Natural Health Perspective health program claims that carrying out the correct personal health fundamentals over a long enough period automatically takes care of all the details.

Lesson #3-The Essentials

There are 7 essential principles of the Natural Health Perspective health program.

  1. Good personal health information does not go on forever; nor, does it change with each health news story.
  2. The fundamental principle of personal health and fitness is moderation and balance in all things.
  3. Every person is born with a natural ability to overcome disease.
  4. The key to success is making changes in small steps.
  5. Success is having patience enough to let time take its course.
  6. It is up to you to take action!
  7. Optimum Health = Healing Power of Nature + Correct Living Habits + Time.

The Natural Health Perspective health program works because when you provide your body with what it needs; all the details will automatically take care of themselves when given enough time.

Lesson #4-Nutritional Supplements & Vitamins

The objective is to take only those nutritional supplements that can improve your own personal health.

Supplements are about popping pills.

« Back | More »

Lesson #5-Eating a Healthy Diet

The objective is to eat a reasonably good diet. How much effort you want to put into it is entirely up to you.

Diet is about what you eat and drink throughout the day.

« Back | More »

Lesson #6-Exercise, Health and Fitness

The objective of exercise is to improve your physical fitness. Thus, if what you are doing does not improve either your cardiovascular fitness or your muscular strength, then it should not be considered as physical exercise.

Physical exercise is about actually performing a physical activity that will strengthen your physical body.

Lesson #7-Attitude and Your Mind

Working on your attitude has a number of objectives. First, you need to become aware of the effect that your mind is having on your own personal health. You need to start questioning your assumptions about health and your automatic responses to events around you. Start questioning whether you have been responding correctly to both external and internal events. Then start perfecting your level of self-control to the point where your mind is in control of your own individual destiny.

Attitude is about your thoughts.

Lesson #8-Resilience

The objective of resiliency is to develop coping skills that effectively deal with the normal vicissitudes of life.

Resilience is about your behavior.

Lesson #1 Continued-What is the Difference?

Many natural health philosophies zero in, in only one tiny area. They say things like “If you do ‘X’ you won't ever get a cold again.”

For example,

  • "If you ‘eat only raw foods’ you won't ever get a cold again;" or
  • "If you ‘eat only organic foods’ you won't ever get a cold again;" or
  • "If you do ‘yoga’ you won't ever get a cold again;" or maybe
  • "If you ‘run five miles a day’ you won't ever get a cold again."

Further, in these philosophies it is more sinister than just saying: “If you do ‘X’ you won’t ever get a cold again.” Fanatical extremists, who convey their positions with religious zeal, often run them.

Unlike these recommendations, the Natural Health Perspective says that:

“If you do ‘A, B, C . . . Z’ you won’t ever get a cold again.”

In other words, the Natural Health Perspective advocates a full spectrum lifestyle approach to health. It offers a commonsense guide to achieving wellness, good personal health, and fitness.

Further, the Natural Health Perspective advocates moderation rather than extremism in everything. How far you want to take your personal health efforts is entirely up to you.

While wellness is a complex issue, the Natural Health Perspective claims that through exercising your own critical thinking skills and using plain old common sense anyone can achieve wellness by making good personal health decisions.

The Natural Health Perspective Health Program offers neither quackery nor the standard hard line position of the medical establishment. Instead, you will find that the Natural Health Perspective presents a refreshing realistic perspective on what you need to do in order to promote wellness and improve your own personal health. A professional presentation of evidence-based health information is made on each Web page. Science-based information is presented on the mind - body connection.

If most of the entire modern world cannot reasonably be expected to be able to do something, then that advice will not be offered. You will never see us recommending that you must raise organic chickens or that you must spend $200 a week on health supplements in order to be healthy. If the advice is not practical in the modern world, then the Natural Health Perspective will not offer it.

Lesson #2 Continued-Keep It Simple!

The Natural Health Perspective keeps health advice as simple as possible. We convey Health concepts with simple witticisms. There is never a need to resort to technical explanations.

Therefore, if you were born with a genetic predisposition towards Alzheimer's disease following prevention and healthy lifestyles in your life would result in your maintaining the highest quality of life for as long as possible. It does not guarantee that you will not eventually come down with Alzheimer's Disease.

What exactly does that mean?

A good analogy is that of painting rusted lawn furniture with rust control paint.

How long will your lawn furniture last after you paint it?

Well, the answer will depend on a number of factors. However, the better the paint job the longer your lawn furniture will last. If you remove the rust down to the metal, use primer, and rust control paint then your paint job will last a very long time. However, if you did not remove the rust and just painted over it with ordinary paint, then your furniture will rust out very quickly.

It should be obvious to all that if you wait until your furniture is over run with rust, the rust will be harder to control. So, if your furniture was very rusty, applying "Rust-Off" to neutralize the rust before applying the primer would make your paint job last even longer. Moreover, if you were to take your furniture to a specialist and had them dip them in vats of special rust destroying chemicals then your furniture would last practically forever. However, if your furniture was only slightly rusty when you began treatment then applying "Rust-Off" or dipping your furniture into vats of chemicals would not appreciably result in longer lasting furniture.

From this simple analogy, we can see that how long your paint job will last depends mostly on how much effort you put into it as well as on a judgment call as to whether or not using advanced techniques would be worth the extra effort.

Just like your health, your rusted lawn furniture is time sensitive. The longer you wait the more your health will degrade and the more your lawn furniture will rust out.

Therefore, we can deduce a number of important things from this simple analogy.

  1. Buying a lot of books on lawn furniture wont keep your furniture from rusting out. Only reading and directly applying your knowledge will help control the rust.
  2. Complaining wont help either. And, in case you don’t already know: Nobody likes a chronic complainer.
  3. Discussing the situation with your neighbors for a couple of years wont help your furniture any. Your furniture would only get even rustier while you wasted time talking.
  4. Nor, would first obtaining a college degree in inorganic chemistry help any. That might help furniture that you will buy in the future, but not the furniture currently rusting away in your yard.
  5. Reading about all the latest research on rust treatment, will not help either. Knowledge will not help any, until it is applied.
  6. In addition, bragging to your neighbors about how great a painter you are will not help control the rust. Often the people who engage in useless bragging the most are those with a science education background.

The only thing that will help the rust problem on your lawn furniture is:

  1. researching what is needed to be done,
  2. making decisions as what needs to be done, and then
  3. finally taking action.

Of course, you can also periodically repeat the above steps.

Knowing what the problem is to begin with always is a good idea. Here, the problem was rust on your lawn furniture. When it comes to your personal health the problem is identifying all your health conditions, which in this case was a genetic predisposition towards Alzheimer's disease. The more specific you are about your health condition, the more targeted your treatment of your health problem can be.

How long will you avoid getting Alzheimer's disease, assuming that you have a genetic predisposition towards Alzheimer's disease?

The answer would likewise depend on a number of factors. It would depend on how much effort you are willing to put into treating your specific health condition. It would also depend on how well you did your research, as well as whether or not you made the correct health decisions along the way.

The primary health problem that we should all be treating right now is the disease called life.

The Natural Health Perspective health program would certainly be a good place to start no matter what health conditions are bothering you. Our program is grounded in the healing therapies of diet, nutritional supplements, exercise, attitude, and resilience.

The Natural Health Perspective health program claims that carrying out the correct personal health fundamentals, which it provides, over a long enough period of time will automatically take care of all the details (ie, all your health conditions).

Lesson #3 Continued-The Essentials

We can take a closer look at each essential of the Natural Health Perspective health program.

1. Good personal health information does not go on forever; Nor, does it change with each health news story.

The publishing of research is all about making money, rather than philanthropy. It is the bread and butter of academia. While health research is constantly being published, good health information is not constantly changing. Neither does the medical establishment have a coherent, well organized, and planned effort to definitively solve the mysteries of health. Published health research does not follow a linear path. Researchers have absolutely no incentive to be efficient. The longer they can drag out research, the more research papers that they will get credit for publishing. Consequently, most health news stories are just noise. The Natural Health Perspective health program claims that carrying out the correct personal health fundamentals will automatically take care of all the details.

2. The fundamental principle of personal health and fitness is moderation and balance in all things.

Moderation and balance is the key to all aspects of human life.

3. Every person is born with a natural ability to overcome disease.

Every one of us has cancer. A typical person might form an average of 30 cancer cells every day. We have in our body a natural ability to kill cancer cells and never be diagnosed with cancer. What we eat and our relationship to our environment can either help or hinder our natural ability to fight illnesses, like cancer.

4. The key to success is making changes in small steps.

As humans, we tend to overdo it when we decide to make lifestyle changes. We all try to do too much, too soon. Slow and steady wins the race to good personal health.

5. Success is having patience enough to let time take its course.

We all are looking for a quick fix. Nevertheless, the truth is that there are no quick fixes to improving personal health.

6. It is up to you to take action!

Find out what improves your health. Then act on that knowledge. Action is the hardest principle to do, but it is by far the most important one for good personal health.

7. Optimum Health = Healing Power of Nature + Correct Living Habits + Time.

The Natural Health Perspective health program claims that carrying out the correct personal health fundamentals over a long enough period automatically takes care of all the details.

When all is said and done, good personal health is as simple as this summation says that it is.

Lesson #4 Continued-Nutritional Supplements & Vitamins

The easiest thing anyone can do is spend money. Throwing money at a problem has always been easy. Nutritional supplements and vitamins are, thus, both the least important and easiest part of a health program to carry out.

The biggest myth of taking vitamins is that if you stuff yourself with enough vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional supplements, you can negate the effects of a poor diet, bad habits and unhealthy lifestyles (such as over eating, smoking, and not exercising).

Still, taking vitamins and other nutritional supplements is good for a few things. An intelligent older adult would take nutritional supplements and vitamins to:

  1. TREAT existing Health Conditions
  2. Provide for general health maintenance, not adequately provided for by diet alone.
    • Supplementing a Less than Perfect Diet
    • Maintaining Minimal Blood Levels of Important Nutrients
    • PREVENTION of Chronic Health Conditions
  3. Periodically Enhancing Key Body Systems

The objective is to take only those nutritional supplements that can improve your own personal health.

"Some nutritional supplements and vitamins are justifiably useful at this point in time."

Fillmore CM, Bartoli L, Bach R.
Nutrition and dietary supplements.
Phys Med Rehabil Clin N Am. 1999 Aug;10(3):673-703. Review.
PMID: 10516985

Treating hyperhomocysteinemia and osteoporosis would likely be a problem for everybody. Hence, taking a few supplements would be an easy way to treat these health conditions.

While there may be a few benefits from taking antioxidant supplements, there is very little evidence to justify spending a great deal of money on them.

And, the old concept of taking mega dosages of certain vitamins, like vitamin C, has not been supported by any recent medical research.

Lesson #5 Continued-Eating a Healthy Diet

Good nutrition from eating a healthy diet is the foundation of all natural health healing therapies. Better nutrition will improve your personal health. Eating healthy is what natural health is all about. Anyone interested in improving his or her nutrition and personal health should eat a healthy diet.

While good nutrition from eating a healthy diet is the foundation of any personal health program; always keep in mind that the objective of healthy nutrition is to end up with, but not start out with, a perfect diet. In other words, you work on your nutrition by making small improvements in it. Over time, these changes will add up to excellent nutrition. Normally, it should take you between two and five years to achieve good nutrition from eating a healthy diet.

Nutrition is a complex issue. Yet through exercising your own critical thinking skills and using plain, old common sense, anyone can get good nutrition from eating a healthy diet. Nutrition is the relationship of foods to the health of the human body. The foods we consume should give our bodies the nutrients necessary for good health. The basic premise of any good diet is variety, balance, and moderation in what we eat regularly. Good nutrition is obtainable without engaging in dietary extremes.

To answer the question: "What is a good healthy diet?," we can compare what man used to eat to what the average modern person eats today (i.e., the western diet).

The western diet has twice the fat, a much higher ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids, a third of the daily fiber intake, much more sugar and salt, fewer complex carbohydrates, and a reduced intake of nutrients; compared with what the human species ate a mere ten generations ago.

The objective is to eat a reasonably good diet. How much effort you want to put into it is entirely up to you.

Several acceptable healthy diets exist, which will grant you healthy nutrition and good personal health.

  1. The Italian Mediterranean Diet
    • Cereal [i.e., Whole Grains] and alcoholic drink consumption was high in Italy during the '60s. A maximum of 40% grains is recommended. You should be eating equal amounts of whole grains and vegetables.
  2. The Omega Diet (or The Cretan Mediterranean Diet )
    • "In Greece the intake of olive oil and fruit was high" during the '60s.
  3. The Asian Diet
    • The Asian Diet can be characterized by a high consumption of fish, rice, and soy products. A reduced consumption of soy products is recommended, for those living outside Japan.
  4. Demi-Vegetarianism
    • Provided you occasionally eat some fish and poultry or at least supplement with vitamin B-12. Demi-vegetarians are people who claim to have eating habits which focus on vegetarian foods, but who will eat fish and white meat on an occasional basis.

Choose one of these 5 healthy diets that is best for you.

Basic Nutrition Guidelines for a Healthy Diet:

  1. Stop eating Junk Food!
  2. Stop eating Junk Food!
  3. Stop eating Junk Food!

You carry out this guideline by:

  • Reducing your overall fat consumption.
  • Reducing your saturated fat consumption to only 10% of total calories consumed.
  • Increasing your consumption of fiber and nutrients by eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Reducing your Added sugar consumption to only 15% of total calories consumed.
  • Reducing your added salt consumption to a maximum of three grams a day.

Lesson #6 Continued-Physical Exercise, Health and Fitness

Physical exercise strengthens your body and makes it more fit and resilient. It provides fitness, something that a healthy diet will never do. Physical exercise promotes growth. Physical exercise makes you feel good. High intensity exercise is what promotes feelings of high energy levels better than any other healing therapy.

Since the beginning of time, survival has been a daily struggle. Simply staying alive was physically demanding. Yet, humans in industrialized societies over the last 150 years have become spoiled. We, now, live in our minds so much of the time that we have almost forgotten that we have a body. Many people work in offices who make their living by reading, writing, speaking, and thinking, but seldom by physical labor.

The objective of physical exercise is to improve your physical fitness. Thus, if what you are doing does not improve either your cardiovascular fitness or your muscular strength, then it should not be considered as physical exercise. This healing therapy is positively not referring to hatha yoga. Yoga is aimed at training your mind, whereas physical exercise is aimed at strengthening your body.

Our bodies are designed to be used. Failure to use them results in your muscles deteriorating, at a steady and progressive rate. Thus, everyone should develop good, sensible habits of physical exercise that they can stick to for the rest of their lives. You should pay attention to three different kinds of physical exercise: an active lifestyle, aerobic exercise, and anaerobic exercise.

AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE - Find ways to make many of your ordinary activities more vigorous. Since man was meant to walk, the easiest way to increase your overall physical fitness is to choose to walk at every opportunity possible. Walking is really an ideal and natural form of physical exercise that anyone can routinely participate in.

AEROBIC EXERCISE - Aerobic activity is long in duration, but low in intensity. Aerobic exercise elevates the heart rate and breathing for a sustained period. Aerobic activity improves the efficiency of your heart and lungs, helps control weight, and increases muscle and joint flexibility.

ANAEROBIC EXERCISE - There is more to physical exercise than just cardiovascular fitness. Muscle strength is an equally important component to overall personal health and fitness. Anaerobic activities are short in duration, and emphasize building muscle, rather than burning oxygen. Independence is required for the highest quality of life. To be independent you must be physically strong. Physical strength is achieved with anaerobic exercise.

Being strong is good. But, weakness can often prove to be fatal.

Lesson #7 Continued-Attitude and Your Mind

The biggest obstacle to improving your own personal health will come from your Attitude/Mind.

Good health is just as much a part of having the correct attitude towards life as it is about having a physically fit body. Indeed, health can even be defined as being successful in coping with pain, sickness, and death as a normal part of life.

A strong mind, or the capacity to say no, improves a person’s health.

The Natural Health Perspective has a definitive position on what a healthy attitude is. You have a healthy attitude only if you believe that the stress in your life comes from how you have chosen to react to the stresses of everyday life, rather than directly from the stressor itself. In other words, you should try changing yourself rather than the world around you.

Our goal here is to obtain control over your own individual destiny by taking control of your own passions, emotions, moods, and urges. The goal is not a life without emotion, but a life in which you are always in control by virtue of your ability to use reason / volition to rule both your body and your passions.

Your Attitude/Mind covers a very broad area.

The Aristotelian subdivisions of the mind (perception, attention, imagination, emotion, motivation, memory, and volition) or the mentalistic concepts of everyday speech can aid people to deal with their inner dialog of self-talk.

Your Attitude/Mind also covers concepts like denial, delusion, rationalizations, habits, paranoia or irrational beliefs/behavior, closed mindedness, dealing with frustration, stress and over-reacting to external events.

Attitude is, also, about having the fortitude to do, what you want to do, when you want to do it. Here, is where you know what you want to do. But, you just can not bring yourself to do it.

The goal of working on your attitude is the avoidance of impulsive tendencies with automatic, but incorrect responses from a personal health perspective. Always be slow to respond to all forms of stress in your environment. Always think, before responding.

« Back

Lesson #8 Continued-Resilience

Resiliency is about your actual ability to maintain an equilibrium of health. The ability to be resilient, or thrive, in spite of adversity will influence your health and wellness.

Resiliency is how you plan to remain in control in every aspect of your life.

Resilience is about developing specific strategies for handling specific situations. Developing resilience is a personal journey. An approach to building resilience that works for you might not work for someone else.

Resilience is about developing coping skills that effectively solve the problem at hand.

It is up to you to take action, and to live your own life by your own terms rather than the dictates of others. It is up to you to listen to yourself and to prepare specific strategies that work for you.

The healing therapy of resilience asks the question: Who is in control of your life? When an external/internal event happens to you, does it totally disrupt your life for months, weeks, days, or even hours? The topic of resiliency asks the question: How do you plan to remain in control in every aspect of your life?

Examples of external events might be: losing your job, having a fight with your spouse, your house burning down, or a major snow storm. Examples of internal events might be: depression and other mood swings, the common cold, or even a headache. When one of these kinds of an event happens to you, does it totally disrupt your life? Or, does an equilibrium of control automatically kick in to put you back in control of your own destiny?

The objective of resiliency is to develop coping skills that effectively deal with the normal vicissitudes of life.

In other words, resilience is about maintaining an equilibrium of health. Everyone should maintain an equilibrium of self-control over their destiny. It, also, means taking the actions that will restore your equilibrium of health whenever an external/internal event throws you out of balance.
